Maren Kalas

Oil on linen · 40 × 50 cm · 2026

Painted over three mornings at Grand Ferry Park, in the hour when the tide pulls back and the rocks turn the color of wet sand. Maren set up at the same bench each time and stopped once the light went flat.

The pale blue band at the top is the Manhattan side, reduced to almost nothing. She wanted the river to feel wide and quiet, the way it does before the first ferry crosses.
