Portrait of Maren Kalas

Maren Kalas

Paints the East River in flat bands of light, on raw linen.

About Maren

Maren Kalas paints from a studio on Kent Avenue with a window onto the river. She works in thin oil on unprimed linen, so the weave shows through every band of color. Her paintings start as ten-minute sketches made at the same spot on the shore, at the same hour, for weeks.

Maren’s coffee

Low Tide

Gedeb, Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia · Washed · Light roast · Bergamot, White peach, Black tea

A light, clear coffee for paintings made of light and air. Like Maren’s river, it is quiet at first and opens as it cools.
